RESUMO

The healthcare system (HCS) is one of the most crucial and essential systems for humanity. Currently, supplying the patients' safety and preventing the medical adverse events (MAEs) in HCS is a global issue. Human and organizational factors (HOFs) are the primary causes of MAEs. However, there are limited analytical methods to investigate the role of these factors in medical errors (MEs). The aim of present study was to introduce a new and applicable framework for the causation of MAEs based on the original HFACS. In this descriptive-analytical study, HOFs related to MEs were initially extracted through a comprehensive literature review. Subsequently, a Delphi study was employed to develop a new human factors analysis and classification system for medical errors (HFACS-MEs) framework. To validate this framework in the causation and analysis of MEs, 180 MAEs were analyzed by using HFACS-MEs. The results showed that the new HFACS-MEs model comprised 5 causal levels and 25 causal categories. The most significant changes in HFACS-MEs compared to the original HFACS included adding a fifth causal level, named "extra-organizational issues", adding the causal categories "management of change" (MOC) and "patient safety culture" (PSC) to fourth causal level", adding "patient-related factors (PRF)" and "task elements" to second causal level and finally, appending "situational violations" to first causal level. Causality analyses among categories in the HFACS-MEs framework showed that the new added causal level (extra-organizational issues) have statistically significant relationships with causal factors of lower levels (Φc≤0.41, p-value≤0.038). Other new causal category including MOC, PSC, PRF and situational violations significantly influenced by the causal categories of higher levels and had an statistically significant effect on the lower-level causal categories (Φc>0.2, p-value<0.05). The framework developed in this study serves as a valuable tool in identifying the causes and causal pathways of MAEs, facilitating a comprehensive analysis of the human factors that significantly impact patient safety within HCS.

Objective: Various phenomena guarantee gamete maturation and formation at all stages of evolution, one of which is autophagy playing a critical role in the final morphology of gametes, particularly sperms. Autophagy is influenced by oxidative stress, disturbances of calcium homeostasis, and hyperthermia conditions. The current study aimed to assess the autophagy-related proteins along with the activity of sperm calcium channel (CatSper) proteins following the induction of heat stress (HS). Methods: The study sample includes two groups of adult mice: sham and HS groups. In the HS group, the right testis was transferred to the abdominal cavity for 120 hours and then returned to the scrotum where it remained for 7 days. After 7 days, the testis and epididymis were removed to conduct real-time, immunohistochemical studies, sperm parameter evaluation, and seminiferous tubule assessment. In this study, the expression and distribution of autophagy proteins were measured. Plus, CatSper1 and CatSper2 were evaluated as proteins of calcium channels. Results: The results of the present study demonstrated that the expression intensity of autophagy indices in seminiferous tubules decreased significantly after HS induction, which was associated with a decrease in the distribution of CatSper proteins in the sperms. HS led to morphological changes in sperm, reduced motility and viability of sperm, and decreased spermatogenesis indices. Conclusion: In this study, following heat stress, the decrease in CatSper protein distribution may lead to the structural disorder of CatSper channels, which could strongly affect autophagic activity. Also, disruption of spermatogenesis and sperm parameters may be the consequence of decreased autophagy activity.

Introduction: Surgeons are one of the most significant jobs in the health care system that plays an important role in the patients' health promotion and their treatment. In the current study, the effect of mental workload on the work performance of surgeons was tested by considering the mediating effect of fatigue on this relationship. Method: This study was done analytically on 165 surgeons working in the operating rooms of hospitals in Iran. To determine of mental workload, the SURG-TLX method was used. The job performance was measured using the short version of the job performance questionnaire provided by the World Health Organization (WHO-HPQ), and accordingly relative presenteeism, relative absenteeism and job performance variables were calculated. The Swedish Occupational Fatigue Inventory (SOFI) questionnaire was used to determine occupational fatigue. A conceptual model was built to determine the direct and indirect relationship between mental workload and job performance, and the mediating effect of occupational fatigue on the relationship between mental workload and job performance was tested using structural equation modeling (SEM). Results: Out of 165 distributed questionnaires, 140 questionnaires were completed and delivered to the researchers (85% response rate). The mean ± standard deviations of mental workload, fatigue, and work performance were 16.57 ± 5.83, 6.32 ± 2.86, and 0.65 ± 0.28, respectively. The results of model fit indexes revealed that all indexes are within the acceptable range. Regarding this model, the direct effect of mental workload on job performance was not significant (ß = -0.21; p = 0.072). A significant positive relationship was observed between mental workload and fatigue (ß = 0.36; p < 0.001). The direct effect of fatigue on job performance was also the opposite and statistically significant (ß = -0.39; p < 0.001). Finally, results indicated that the effect of mental workload on work performance mediated by occupational fatigue. Conclusion: Surgeons suffer a high level of mental workload during their work, and this factor can have a negative effect on surgeons' job performance. The effect of mental workload on job performance in surgeons can be detected, directly and indirectly, through the mediating effect of occupational fatigue. Improving the mental and physical conditions of the work environment can reduce occupational fatigue and improve surgeons' job performance.

Low-molecular-weight organic acids (LMWOAs) interact with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and affect their mobility; however, the effect of different amendments on PTEs release from soils when added along with LMWOAs is still unclear. In this study, two soils (a clay loam and a sandy loam) amended with sugar beet bagasse ash (SBBA), poultry manure (PM), sewage sludge (SS) from Kermanshah city (SSK), and SS from Toyserkan city (SST) at a rate of 5 %. In these treatments we studied release of Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn with citric, oxalic, and malic acids added at 10 different rates each, i.e., 0.1, 1, 2.5, 5, 10, 30, 40, 50, 70, and 100 mmol L-1. We found that the percentage of PTEs release was higher for citric, followed by oxalic and malic acids. The highest amount of PTEs released in both soils decreased in the following order: SST > SBBA > SSK > PM. The percentage of PTEs complexed with LMWOAs and the log activity of PTEs species mostly increased with decreasing pH. It could be concluded that the application of PM is more environmentally friendly than that of the other amendments. Since Cd had the highest percentage of release in all treated soils and LMWOAs, more consideration should be given to Cd to prevent environmental pollution.

Phosphorus (P) inputs are essential for maximizing agronomic potential, yet high P inputs and subsequent P losses can cause eutrophication of water bodies. There is a need to evaluate P contents in agricultural soils globally both from an agronomic and environmental perspective. This systematic review and meta-analysis estimated the pooled mean levels of P contents of Iran. In this study, data on available and total P contents of Iran's calcareous soils was compiled (main focus on Olsen P) and compared to (i) estimated Iranian background and global agricultural soil P contents, and (ii) agronomic and (iii) environmentally critical Olsen P values. The pooled mean estimate from the meta-analysis indicates that the levels of Olsen P across 425 soil samples (27 studies) were 21.3 mg kg-1 and total P across 190 soil samples (12 studies) 805.5 mg kg-1. Using 26 mg kg-1 as the agronomic critical Olsen P value above which no increase in crop yield occurs, crops grown on 61% of the soil samples in the investigated region would respond to P fertilizer and 20% of soils are currently in the optimum category (26-45 mg kg-1 Olsen P). The environmentally critical Olsen P value (~ 63 mg kg-1), defined as the amount above which P leaches from soil rapidly, was exceeded by 11% of soils with a further 4% of soils with elevated eutrophication risk. To maximize crop yields while maintaining a minimal risk of P leaching in Iran's calcareous soils, we suggest an ideal Olsen P of 26 mg kg-1. The outcomes from this study inform about the P status of Iranian soils and could help update recommendations for P fertilizer applications in calcareous soils globally. The framework presented here could further be adopted to evaluate the P status in other soil types.

It is critical to understand the risk of element pollution in soils by evaluating their background levels. Phosphorus (P) content in agricultural soils needs to be assessed from agronomic and environmental standpoints. The current study intended to calculate the background levels of available and total P in soils. To achieve this goal, 50 sites without human activities were selected. Soils were sampled from the surface and subsurface of each site (100 soil samples). The available P forms in soils were extracted using the water-extractable P (WEP), calcium chloride-extractable P (CCEP), and Olsen-extractable P (OEP) methods. The first two extractants are being used to evaluate P leaching from soils, while the last one is being used as an agronomic indicator. The methods used to calculate background levels were the iterative 2-δ technique (2-δ) and the calculated distribution function (CDF). Results showed that the upper limits of background levels using 2-δ method were 1.45, 0.92, 8.12, and 424.4 mg kg-1 for WEP, CCEP, OEP, and total P, respectively. Also, the upper limits of background levels using CDF method were 1.42, 1.15, 12.09, and 447.6 mg kg-1, for WEP, CCEP, OEP, and total P, respectively. It can be concluded that using these background levels, which for the first time were calculated for P, would enable us to have an accurate examination of P excess as a result of human activities.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are known as one of the main problems affecting the health of industrial workers and can lead to lost working days, functional disability of workers and wasting the financial resources of an organization. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluating the effect of ergonomic interventions on reducing MSDs and improving working posture in the in a foundry industry workers. METHODS: A field multicomponent cross-interventional study was conducted on workers working in a foundry industry. In this study, 117 male workers were divided into 4 groups, including a control group, a group with specialized ergonomics training, a group with workstation intervention, and a group simultaneously undergoing training and workstation intervention. All 4 groups were evaluated during a period of baseline, 6 and 12-months follow- up. The Cornell Musculoskeletal Discomfort Questionnaire (CMDQ) and direct observations of working postures by using the Quick Exposure Check (QEC) method were used. RESULTS: The results showed that the implemented interventions in the shoulder/arm, back and stress level were effective and the difference in the final score was significant among different groups (P-value > 0.05). In addition, the interventions led to a significant decrease in the QEC scores and musculoskeletal symptom scores in the neck, shoulder, lower back, knee, and lower leg regions among different groups (P-value > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The results showed that workstation modification and training and workstation intervention simultaneously had a greater effect on MSDs and improving working posture compared to training alone.

With growing urbanization and agriculture, the quantity of sewage sludge production increases every year. For the purpose of risk management, it is crucial to figure out how much heavy metals are transported to different parts of plants when sewage sludge is used. A greenhouse experiment was carried out to investigate the accumulation of heavy metals in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grown in 30 calcareous soils. The soils in this study were subjected to three different treatments: soils treated with sewage sludge at a rate of 2.5%, soils treated with sewage sludge at a rate of 2.5% and enriched with heavy metals, and control soils that received neither sewage sludge nor heavy metals. Wheat grown in sewage sludge-treated soils had the highest mean dry matter, and was 2.11 and 1.25 times greater than wheat grown in control and spiked-sewage sludge-treated soils, respectively. In all treatments, wheat roots had greater heavy metal levels than wheat shoots. Among all the heavy metals examined, Pb and Cu had the highest bioconcentration factors for roots and shoots (BCFRoots and BCFShoots) in control and sewage sludge-treated soils, followed by Cd in spiked-sewage sludge-treated soils, and Co and Ni had the lowest BCFRoots and BCFShoots across all treatments. In spiked-sewage sludge-treated soils, the root restriction for heavy metals translocation was more important for Co, Cu, and Ni than for Pb and Zn, indicating that wheat can be grown safely in a variety of calcareous soils amended with sewage sludge with high content of Cd, Co, Cu, and Ni. Reducing the transfer of Pb and Zn from soils to wheat in soils treated with sewage sludge yet having high concentrations of these heavy metals should be considered as a top priority strategy for preserving wheat products. Since a wide range of calcareous soils was used in this study and because calcareous soils make up the majority of soils in the Middle East, the findings are relevant for all of the countries in this region.

Hospitals, as one of most important subsectors in human societies, are responsible for providing safe and effective medical services to clients. But sometimes these hospitals are the source of injury and death in patients by creating medical errors. In this systematic review study, the application of human factor analysis and classification system (HFACS) method in the classification of medical errors was investigated. Major electronic databases including Scopus, Web of Science, and MEDLINE were searched. All studies that investigated the application of HFACS method for coding, causation, and classification of medical errors and adverse events conducted from 2001 until February 2021 were included. A total of 108 articles were found. Due to duplication, 18 studies were removed from the review list. After reading the titles and abstracts, 50 of these publications were excluded because they had objectives different from this review. The remaining 40 publications were retrieved for further assessment. Of these, 28 publications were excluded because it did not meet the inclusion criteria. Finally, 12 articles remained for the final systematic review. We found that in 65% of the selected studies, preconditions for unsafe acts have been the major causal level of medical errors and adverse events. In the majority of the studies, communication and coordination, adverse mental states, physical environment, crew resource management, and technological environment have also been recognized as the most important causal categories in this study. As a result, to prevent medical errors and adverse events, the main focus should be on controlling the preconditions for unsafe acts including personnel factors, operator conditions, and environmental factors.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes is associated with reproductive impairment on the male reproductive system and causes complications such as decreased libido, fertility, spermatogenesis, sperm motility, and morphology. High levels of blood sugar may affect sperm quality and reduce the potential for male fertility. Increased levels of sperm DNA damage is often associated with reduced count and motility or abnormal morphology. METHODS: This experimental study was conducted in Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. In this work, 40 mice (C57BL/6) were divided randomly into 4 groups: 1) Control, 2) Diabetic, 3) Diabetic + Insulin, and 4) Sham. After 35 days, the right epididymis of all specimens was used for Real-Time PCR and left epididymis for evaluation of sperm parameters using Aniline blue, Toluidine blue, Papanicolaou, and immunohistochemical study. Also, testes were applied for immunohistochemical, TUNEL studies, and biochemical assay. RESULTS: Results of this study showed that chromatin integrity, morphology, cation channels of sperm (Catsper) expression, and biochemical factors level were significantly changed in diabetic mice in comparison to other groups (P<0.05) and treatment with insulin improved these parameters. CONCLUSION: Our findings showed that the sperm parameters such as DNA integrity, morphology, and Catsper expression change in diabetic mice.

At moderate to high fertilization rates, sandy-textured soils can leach much phosphorus (P) threatening surface water quality. High rates are used to compensate for P leaching, but there is also potential to reduce P leaching by using different P fertilizers. We examined the effect of poultry manure (PM), sheep manure (SM), triple superphosphate (TSP), sewage sludge of Sanandaj (SSS), sewage sludge of Toyserkan (SST), and biochars of Sanandaj and Toyserkan sewage sludges (BSSS and BSST, respectively) applied at a rate of 100 mg P kg-1 (equivalent to 220 kg P ha-1 yr-1, the current regional practice for capital applications designed to raise and maintain soil P in the region) on P leaching over 10 pore volumes (equivalent to 589 mm rainfall) through a sandy clay loam soil widespread in Iran (and the Middle East). Phosphorus leaching losses decreased in the following order: TSP > SM > PM > SST > BSSS > control > SSS > BSST. The leachability of fertilized soil was best estimated by measurement of the mobile KCl-P fraction. At the capital application rate used, SSs or their biochars represented the least risk of P leaching and could be used in place of highly soluble manures or TSP to either protect water quality or maintain more P in the soil. However, this should only occur after confirming that this substitution does not impair agronomic performance.

After the outbreak of COVID-19, many dental clinics use dry fogging of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to disinfect the air and surfaces. Inhalation of highly concentrated solutions of H2O2 may cause severe respiratory problems. This study aimed to estimate the health risk assessments of inhalation exposure to dry fogging of H2O2 in a dental clinic. This cross-sectional, descriptive-analytical study was performed to determine the inhalation exposure and health risk of 9 dental clinic staff with H2O2 in six rooms. Occupational exposure to H2O2 was assessed using the OSHA VI-6 method and a personal pump with the flow rate of 500 mL/min connected to the midget fritted-glass impinger containing 15 mL of TiOSO4 collecting solution. The health effects of H2O2 exposure were assessed using a respiratory symptoms questionnaire. The health risk assessment of inhaled exposure to H2O2 was also performed using the method provided by the Singapore occupational health department. The mean respiratory exposure of clinic staff to H2O2 was ranged from 1.3 to 2.83 ppm for six rooms which was above the limits recommended by international organizations. Dyspnea (44.4%), cough (33.3%), and nasal burning (22.2%) were the most prevalent health problems. The results also showed a medium risk for endodontics and surgery, and lower risk for periodontics, restorative care, orthodontics, and prosthetics. The results of this study indicate that when using an automated hydrogen peroxide-vapor fogger, calculating the spraying time based on room volume and using the rooms after 30 min of fogging is very important and can greatly reduce the risk ranking.

BACKGROUND: One of the types of catabolic processes in cells is autophagy, which maintains cell homeostasis. It is also known as a defense response to oxidative stress. This study aimed to track the autophagic activity of testicular tissue in mature and immature rats in 3 conditions: (1) physiologic, (2) under increased pressure in the tunica albuginea compartment following the induction of testicular torsion, and (3) decompression of this compartment by flap technique. METHODS: This study was performed on 72 Wistar rats divided into 3 mature and 3 immature groups, each of the groups including Sham group, testicular torsion induction group for 6 hours (Torsion Detorsion), and testicular torsion induction group for 6 hours, followed by the flap technique. RESULTS: In the physiologic state or Sham, autophagic indices (LC3, Beclin-1) are active, and more activity was observed in mature rats, compared with immature ones, which indicated the activity of this process during development and maturity. In the Torsion Detorsion group, significant expression of autophagy and apoptosis indices (caspase3) was observed along with the degradation of spermatogenesis and steroidogenesis. It seems that in this state, the activation of autophagy leads to programmed death and is in line with apoptosis. Finally, in the flap technique group, an increase in the expression of autophagy indices was accompanied by a reduction in the expression of apoptotic indices and improved spermatogenesis and steroidogenesis. CONCLUSION: Decompression of tunica albuginea by flap technique can activate of autophagy process to save tissue function and eliminate stress caused by testicular torsion.

Phosphorus (P) leaching from agricultural soils, in consequence of long-term utilization of P fertilizers, decreases the water quality and leads to eutrophication. The effect of monopotassium phosphate (MKP) at the rates of 0, 50, 200, 400, and 800 mg P kg-1 on P and certain cations leaching from two agricultural soils (loam and sandy loam soils) was investigated in a laboratory study. Soil treatments were packed in columns with 5 cm in diameter, up to 10 cm. Soil columns were leached using distilled water solution for 20 pore volumes, and the leachates were analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity (EC), calcium (Ca), sodium (Na), potassium (K), and P. To simulate the concentrations of K and P in leachates, the PHREEQC model was utilized. In addition, the P vertical distribution in different depths of the soil columns after the leaching experiment was investigated using Olsen-extractable P (Olsen-P). Generally, as the MKP rates increased, the mean (mean of 20 pore volumes) value of pH and Ca concentration in leachates decreased, but the mean value of EC, Na, and K concentrations in leachates increased. In early pore volumes, the P concentration in all treatments begins to rise, then begins to fall. The application of different rates of MKP fertilizer increased the cumulative amount of P leached in both studied soils. Significant relations were obtained for the rates of MKP application and the cumulative amount of P leached. Overall, the model did a good job of simulating K and P concentrations in leachates, as well as the trend of K and P leaching. In both treated soils with increasing of fertilizer rates, the Olsen-P status in all depths increased, and the P content increased with depth. The Olsen-P contents before the leaching experiment for each treatment were predicted, and power equations significantly described its relation with mean P concentration in leachates. Higher application rates of MKP (400 and 800 mg P kg-1) resulted in much higher P concentrations in leachates than the threshold value (0.1 mg l-1), and these rates should not be used in agricultural soils, whereas applying 50 mg P kg-1 to agricultural soil could be a reasonable rate for preventing P losses.

Autophagy is a vital process that maintains cellular homeostasis by joining lysosomes and providing energy production substrates. In testicular tissue, Sertoli cells play functional roles in spermatogenesis and steroidogenesis. It is well known that autophagy physiologically occurs in the Sertoli cells. Under pathological conditions, such as testicular torsion, autophagy can be activated under high-stress stimuli. It is worth noting that Sertoli cells receive autophagy-induced signals through some extracellular matrix proteins, e.g. laminin and fibronectin. The present study aims to evaluate Sertoli cells' autophagy-associated extracellular matrix proteins' alteration following testicular torsion in rat model. The animals were divided into two groups as sham and testicular torsion/detorsion groups. In the testicular torsion/detorsion group, testicular torsion was maintained for 6 hr, followed by detorsion for 14 days. The obtained results revealed that testicular torsion-induced oxidative stress leads to increased autophagy in Sertoli cells as well as the whole testicular tissue. Moreover, extracellular matrix proteins including laminin and fibronectin act as autophagy-regulating proteins, in which their expression levels are reduced and increased respectively. In addition, the level of caspase-3, as an autophagy inhibitory protein, did not increase significantly in the cytoplasm of Sertoli cells as opposed to whole testicular tissue, indicating that autophagy is active after testicular torsion in these cells.

BACKGROUND: Long-term use of computer in a static mode may cause musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in bank staff. Considering the high number of bank employees in different countries, such as Iran, the risk factors of these disorders should be investigated in order to implement interventions required to reduce the risk factors. This study aimed to examine the risk factors of MSDs using the Rapid Office Strain Assessment (ROSA) method and to perform an ergonomic intervention program with banking staff in Iran. METHODS: This interventional study was conducted on 277 bank employees in Iran. Subjects were randomly divided into three groups, including a control group (without any intervention), an educational intervention (EI) group, and a group receiving both educational and physical intervention (EPI). Before and after the intervention, the ROSA method and Nordic questionnaire were used to assess the risk factors of MSDs in office jobs and to investigate the prevalence of MSDs. Data were collected 2 weeks before and 9 months following the intervention. RESULTS: Before the intervention, the mean score of ROSA at workstations of all groups was above five with high risk. Nine months after the start of the intervention, there was a significant decrease in the mean ROSA score and its components in the two groups that received the intervention, which was statistically significant (P < 0.001). The results of the study of the prevalence of MSDs in the employees-before the intervention-indicate that the highest prevalence of MSDs in the control group was in areas of the neck (67.1%), back (64.4%), and lower back (63%). In the EI group, the highest prevalence of MSDs was in the neck (65.2%), lower back (61.6%), and back (60.7%) areas. In the EPI group, the discomfort areas were the neck (68.5%), shoulders (66.3%), and lower back (60.9%). Nine months after the intervention, there was a significant decrease in the prevalence of MSDs in the neck, shoulders, and lumbar regions of staff who received the intervention (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Nine months after performing the interventions, there was a relative improvement in workstations and prevalence of MSDs in various areas within the bodies of the bank staff. This study showed that using the ROSA method is appropriate for assessing the risk factors of office work and that it can identify deficiencies in workstations. These defects can be addressed by designing and implementing an EI program together with physical interventions according to the components of the ROSA method.

The physicochemical, sensorial, and microbial properties related to the samples of ketchup containing different inulin (0, 3.75, and 7.5%) and date syrup values (0, 2.25, and 4.5%) were assessed in the present study and the results were analysed through statistical response surface method. Considering the mutual effect, an increase in inulin level led to a primary upward and secondary downward trend in brix and synersis, while the conditions were reversed by enhancing date syrup one. In addition, the mutual effect of inulin and date syrup on sensorial properties represented that flavour and overall acceptance first increased by improving inulin amount and decreased in the following, which was different to colour parameter, while adding date syrup affected colour factor in produced ketchup appropriately. Further, an enhancement in inulin value influenced a little the presence of acid-resistant bacteria, yeast, and mould, while increasing date syrup one led to the durability of microbial corruption. Finally, using the optimum levels of inulin (3.75%) and date syrup (1.13%) could affect ketchup formula properly.

Formaldehyde is a colorless and highly irritating substance that is used as a preservative and chemical fixative in tissue processing in pathological laboratories. Formaldehyde is mutagenic and is classified by the IARC as the definitive carcinogen (A1 group). This cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study was performed to determine the respiratory exposure of 60 employees of pathology labs with formaldehyde and to estimate carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk in Iran in 2018-2019. Occupational exposure to formaldehyde was assessed in summer season using the NIOSH 3500 method and a personal sampler with flow of 1 l/min connected to two Glass Midget Impingers containing 20 ml of 1% sodium bisulfate solution. The respiratory symptoms questionnaire provided by the American Thoracic Society was used to assess the health effects of formaldehyde exposure. The carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk assessment of inhaled exposure to formaldehyde was also performed using the USA Environmental Protection Agency (OEHHA) method. The mean respiratory exposure of employees to formaldehyde was 0.64 mg/m3 (range: 0.1474 to 1.3757). Occupational exposure in 28.3% (n = 17) of employees was above the OSHA recommended range. Wheezing (24%), burning eyes (25%), and cough (21.7%) were the most prevalent health problems. The mean ± SD of the carcinogenic risk among the employees was 3.45 × 10-4 ± 2.27 × 10-4. The highest mean of carcinogenic risk was found in lab workers (4.44 × 10-4). Given the high level of carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk of respiratory exposure to formaldehyde in pathological employees, especially lab worker, the use of management controls, engineering controls, and respiratory protection equipment to reduce exposure levels of all workers to less than the allowed exposure limits seems necessary.

Extracellular matrix (ECM) exerts a major role in maintaining the structure and developmental processes of tissues. To form the tubular basement membrane in the kidney, sulfate proteoglycans, collagen, laminin, fibronectin, and other glycoproteins congregate in the ECM. As an insecticide, diazinon (DZN) may alter the proportion of ECM by cholinesterase activity inhibition and oxidative stress. The naturally, alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) plays an effective and therapeutic role in the treatment of toxicities and diseases in the body. In the current study, an attempt was made to evaluate the impacts of alpha-lipoic acid on the distribution of fibronectin and laminin in the renal tubules of male Wistar rats following exposure to diazinon. In this study, the animal groups comprised 30 adult male Wistar rats (almost three months old) randomly distributed into the following groups; control, DZN (40 mg/kg), DZN + ALA (40 mg/kg+100 mg/kg), ALA (100 mg/kg), and sham. The rats were anesthetized after six weeks. Blood sampling was performed, and kidneys were removed for immunohistochemistry study. Diazinon reduced the distribution of fibronectin and laminin and significantly inhibited cholinesterase activity in the renal tubules. Furthermore, urea and creatinine levels were higher in diazinon than in other groups. ALA in the co-treatment group enhanced cholinesterase activity and distribution of both glycoproteins in the renal tubules. Urea and creatinine levels were meaningfully diminished in the DZN + ALA group. The nephrotoxic effect of diazinon in vivo was the reduced distribution of laminin and fibronectin, probably induced by cholinesterase activity inhibition. As an antioxidant with specific properties, ALA reduces the nephrotoxic effects of diazinon by multifarious mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: CATSPER 1 (Cation Channel Sperm Associated 1) and CATSPER2 channels have an important role in sperm motility. In this study, the effects of hyperthyroidism on Catsper1 and 2 genes of seminiferous tubules in mice testes were investigated. OBJECTIVE: The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of hyperthyroidism on the expression of CATSPER1 and CATSPER2 genes in the seminiferous tubules of mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted on 20 BALB/C male mice divided into two groups - experimental and control. The experimental group was administered with 500 mg/l levothyroxine (L-thyroxine) liquid solution for two months for inducing hyperthyroidism, which was confirmed by radioimmunoassay. On the other hand, the control group was kept in animal houses under a normal condition. The implementation of real-time polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemical studies was accomplished after the removal of the testes of the mice under anesthesia induced by chloroform. RESULTS: Results showed that there was no significant difference in CATSPER1 (p = 0.45) and CATSPER2 (p = 0.34) gene expression between groups. At the same time, the color intensity showed no significant enhancement in the hyperthyroidism group (CATSPER1 p = 0.17 and CATSPER2 p = 0.22) as compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: Considering the key role of CATSPER in the molecular structure of the sperm, our findings showed that the hyperactivity of the thyroid gland has no significant effects on the function of these components. Therefore, it might be concluded that hyperthyroidism has no considerable effects on the seminiferous tubules.
